In addition to typical design constraints like loads, materials, and environmental factors, how parts and assemblies will be manufactured and inspected are key considerations in the course of design. GD&T is key to these design inputs because it establishes datum reference frames through which the part or assembly interfaces with surrounding items in the system. Furthermore, incorporating GD&T into the design from the beginning simplifies downstream activities like tolerance analysis, production fixture design, and inspection gauge design.
